There’s a common assumption that a brand-new home doesn’t need exterior cleaning. The home was just built. The concrete is fresh. The siding came straight from the manufacturer. What’s there to clean?
Quite a bit, actually. New construction homes in Arlington and throughout the DFW area accumulate a surprising amount of debris, residue, and staining during and immediately after the building process. Most of it isn’t visible from the street at first glance, but it’s there.
If you’ve recently moved into a newly built house, or you’re getting ready to, here’s what’s typically left behind after construction wraps up.
What New Construction Actually Leaves Behind
The building process involves dozens of different trades working on a site over weeks or months. Framers, roofers, masons, painters, concrete crews, HVAC installers, and finishing crews all work across the exterior of the home at different stages. Each trade leaves something behind.
Concrete driveways and sidewalks often have form release agent residue, curing compound, and efflorescence on the surface after the concrete sets. Efflorescence is the white, chalky mineral deposit that appears when water moves through concrete and deposits salts on the surface. It’s common on new concrete and doesn’t go away on its own. It needs to be cleaned off with the right approach.
Roofs collect sawdust, shingle granules, and debris from installation. Depending on the construction timeline, some organic staining may have started forming on the roof surface before move-in, especially if the home sat finished for several months before it sold.
Siding and brick get splattered with caulk, paint, and mortar during finishing. These aren’t always cleaned properly before the builder hands over the keys. Some of it is subtle. Some of it is fairly obvious once you’re looking for it.
Construction Dust & Residue on Concrete
The concrete work alone generates a significant amount of surface residue on new builds. Beyond the curing compounds and form release agents, concrete crews leave behind tire marks from equipment, boot prints from workers, and in some cases saw-cut dust from expansion joint work.
Some of this comes off with rain. Most of it doesn’t. High-pressure concrete cleaning with a surface cleaner removes it quickly and leaves the driveway looking the way it should from the start.
The Builder’s Cleanup Isn’t a Deep Clean
Builders do a walkthrough and basic cleanup before closing. That typically involves sweeping, wiping down interior surfaces, and removing construction debris from the yard. It does not include professional exterior cleaning.
In most cases, the exterior walkthrough is a quick visual check. If something is obviously wrong, it gets flagged. Surface residue on concrete, splatter on siding, and minor staining on roofing materials don’t usually make that list. They’re not structural issues. They’re cleaning issues, and they’re left for the homeowner to deal with.
What Gets Missed in the Final Walkthrough
Caulk residue on brick and trim is one of the most commonly missed items. During finishing, exterior caulk is applied around windows, doors, and trim, and the excess doesn’t always get wiped down properly. It cures in place and becomes much harder to remove over time.
Paint overspray on concrete and brick is another common one. Painters work fast, and masking isn’t always thorough. Small spots of overspray on driveways and sidewalks are easy to miss on a walkthrough but show up clearly once the home is occupied.
Mortar smears on brick and stone are also frequently left behind. These harden over time and are significantly harder to remove the longer they sit.
Why Timing Matters for New Construction Cleaning
Getting exterior cleaning done early after move-in matters for a few reasons. The longer surface residues sit, the harder they are to remove. Curing compounds, efflorescence, mortar smears, and paint overspray all bond more firmly to surfaces over time.
There’s also the question of establishing a baseline. Cleaning your new home’s exterior shortly after move-in removes the construction residue that’s present and gives you a clean starting point for ongoing maintenance. You’re not trying to clean years of buildup. You’re dealing with construction-specific residue before it has time to set in.
New Concrete Needs Special Care
Fresh concrete requires attention before standard maintenance cleaning begins. Efflorescence and curing compounds on new concrete need to be addressed without high concentrations of acid-based cleaners, which can etch the surface. A professional crew knows how to approach new concrete appropriately to get it clean without causing surface damage.
Waiting until the concrete has fully cured, usually about 28 days after the pour, before doing any pressure cleaning is also worth knowing. Cleaning too early on very new concrete can affect the surface finish.
What a New Construction Cleaning Typically Covers
For most new builds, a post-construction exterior cleaning covers the driveway and sidewalks, the home’s exterior siding or brick, any patios or covered outdoor areas, and possibly the roof depending on what accumulated during construction.
It’s not the same scope as a full annual maintenance cleaning on an established home. It’s more targeted: removing construction-specific residue and getting the exterior to the baseline condition it should have been in from day one.

Moving into a new home is a significant investment. The exterior shouldn’t look like it just came off a job site. A professional post-construction pressure wash clears out what the builder left behind and gives you a clean exterior to maintain going forward.
